Trump Floats Bonuses for Trained, Armed Teachers

PRESIDENT Donald Trump on Thursday suggested rewarding teachers who are trained how to use firearms and have a conceal carry permit with bonuses – one of several ideas the administration is considering as a way to prevent another school shooting in the wake of a Florida school shooting in which a former student killed 17 children and adults.

The president called for "a little bit of a bonus," according to the White House pool report, for teachers who go through "rigorous training" to carry concealed weapons.

"You can't hire enough security guards," Trump said. "But you could have concealed on the teachers."

The remarks came a day after the president hosted an emotional listening session with grieving parents and students who were personally affected by some of the country's deadliest school shootings, including last week's at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

It was there that Trump officially pitched what many had been speculating he would: arming teachers with guns.

"We're going to be looking at it very strongly," he said.

But the pushback was almost immediate, with even some Republican members of Congress rejecting the idea, including Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

On Thursday, when the president met with state and local officials to continue talking about school safety, Trump suggested that as many as 40 percent of teachers could qualify for such a bonus structure.

"I want my schools protected just like I want my banks protected," he continued. "When you say this school is gun free … that's what they want to hear."
