Sports Illustrated is one of the biggest sports media house in the US, if not the world. Its sports coverage is critically acclaimed and has a huge subscription in the States. However, many people claim that the Swimsuit edition of the magazine has made Sports Illustrated more famous than the magazine proper. Well, guys agree for sure! The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine is, just like the main magazine, one of the most subscribed magazines in the country. The Swimsuit pages were made only to fill up the main magazine during the winter of 1964. However, with gaining popularity over the next two decades, Sports Illustrated decided to launch an entire separate Swimsuit magazine since 1997.

The models used for the Swimsuit magazine are professionals and experienced in the particular line. It is often regarded that when a model is on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, she is in the top of her career. Hence, the Swimsuit issue has seen plenty of top-quality models over the years. Babette March was the first ever Sports Illustrated magazine cover model, back in ’64, followed by a five-page layout.

Swimsuit

There was no looking back for the Swimsuit issue after the grand success. Many models have gained popularity because of the Swimsuit issue and similarly, the magazine has gained popularity because of established and famous models in their cover. Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Paulina Porizkova, Elle Macpherson, Rachel Hunter, Rebecca Romijn, Petra Nemcova, Valeria Mazza, Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, and Marisa Miller have been the most popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models to feature on the cover. Such is the popularity of the magazine, that many Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models who haven’t even featured on the cover have gained unbelievable popularity, like Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, Niki Taylor, and Angie Everhart.

With the internet and social media platforms like Instagram, both the magazine and its models have gained even more popularity. Sports Illustrated Swimsuit launched their Instagram profile shortly after the photo and video-sharing social networking service became popular in 2012. Many models associated with the magazine are now known and referred to as a “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model” or simply a “Swimsuit model” to distinguish them from other models. Gigi Hadid is arguably the most famous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, as of now. Irina Shayk, Samantha Hoopes, Lacy Schnoor and Kate Upton are amongst the other popular Swimsuit models in the recent few editions. Ashley Graham, an American model, has gained fame by being one of the bulkiest models to pose for the magazine. Despite her lower body fat, she’s considered to be one of the best models in the world, mainly because of her ability to pose for innumerable topless photos. Topless photos, along with small-bikini ones are the most popular type of shoot, getting excessive views and sales.

Many non-models and famous personalities, such as Beyoncé, Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey have also been on the inset as well as a cover of the magazine.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models are often known to be the hottest, sexiest or prettiest women in the world. Well, who can deny!
