Fall Fashion | More is more when it comes to accessories

Show us a woman who claims she owns enough bags, pairs of statement earrings, or bold rings, and we’ll show you a woman who hasn’t seen half the accessories this season has to offer. “For me, accessories are the icing on the cake,” says Shannon Schaefer, Senior Fashion Director at Nordstrom. “They’re my favourite part, and I always add them — they can either complete my look or totally reinvent a faithful staple in my closet.”

This fall, with fashionphiles everywhere now well and truly familiar with the Gucci look, more is, well, more when it comes to accessorizing. Of all the trends, it’s the one that continues to excite, thanks to its unique recipe of eccentric colour combos, statement pieces, and highly Instagrammable accessories. It’s also a trend that’s relatively easy to achieve, whether you’re skinted or minted. “The maximalism trend seen at Gucci is easy accomplished through accessories,” agrees Schaefer. “Pile on chokers, bold rings, multiple pins, patterned silk scarves, and statement earrings to get the look.”

However, if your accessories approach is more about arm candy, well, the new season bears goodies for you, too. “There aren’t many pieces in your wardrobe that you may use everyday,” says Schaefer, “so I recommend finding and investing in a handbag that complements your style.” This fall, the classic fold-over bag (a.k.a. the “flap bag”) is a key silhouette. If you’ve been thinking of investing in a classic Chanel 2.55, now’s the time. Alternatively, the slightly larger Chloé Faye bag offers a roomier interior than the 2.55, and its metal ring closure and trapezoidal shape nod to the bohemian ‘70s — another trend that continues to dominate fashion.

For Schaefer, smart accessorizing is all about topping up your wardrobe with a few key pieces. This season, her list of must-haves includes a new pair of hoop earrings — but not just any old type of hoop. “They’ve evolved this season with new, architectural shapes, earring jackets, and unexpected details,” she explains, “and they can be paired with almost every outfit.” Next on her list? A silk scarf. Not only are they ideal for achieving the Gucci girl look, they can also be worn in so many ways: around your neck, on your bag, at your waist, and even on your wrist.

When it comes to your outfit, it’s all about striking the right balance. A standout necklace looks best with a turtleneck, simple button-down shirt or clean-collared sweater; on the other hand, bold fishnets or coloured trouser socks are a wallet-friendly way to add some fun to your bottom half (especially if you haven’t invested in a new pair of shoes just yet). “The fall runways were full of bold hosiery, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the look,” agrees Schaefer.

Ready to head out the door? Not before you add a final flourish to your look. “Fashion meets function as hats complete the look this fall,” states Schaefer. Berets continue their reign (thanks again to Gucci), baseball caps are back in a big way, and wide-brimmed, wool hats get revitalized in bold hues. And with all the choice, colour, and personality in this season’s accessories, we’re feeling pretty revitalized ourselves.
