In a nation of 1.3 billion people, where sports is akin to religion— cricket notwithstanding, as it sways over other disciplines—there is a niche market for sports and ample scope for generating sports content. Indians are voracious sport content consumers, always looking for their dose of sports entertainment. The popularity of sports in the subcontinent is on the rise in recent times, with Indian athletes making their mark in the international arena more than ever before.
Yet, for Indians, the only go-to source to assimilate sports content is television. There has been a perpetual dearth of platforms other than TV, where people can enjoy sports. But, at the same time, people are also drifting away from television with more and more time spent online on digital mediums. The proliferation of mobile technology and the launching of new apps every other day have put television on the back burner. People want everything at the press of a button.
However, with the launch of Power Sportz, India’s first digital sports news, and journalism channel, this gap seems to be fairly bridged. In fact, the idea of launching Power Sportz germinated from this predicament of the Indian sports buff, spurring Kanthi Suresh to come up with a platform that would not only cater to all sports lovers but Indian athletes as well.
On the 19th of May, 2018, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Power Sportz was launched in an event marked by the presence several dignitaries and thronged by people from all walks of life including sportspersons.
PS to blaze a trail
With her decade-long experience in sports media, Kanti is surely breaking new ground with the launch of Power Sportz. Kanthi D. Suresh started her career with DD Sports as an anchor for the Beijing Summer Olympics. After the successful stint, she went on to host the 2010 CWG in New Delhi, cover the 2010 China Asian Games, the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Apart from these Kanti was also associated with several other sports shows and programs.
Gathering of eminent guests during the launch
The launch ceremony of Power Sportz was evidently a star-studded one, with several dignitaries gracing the occasion. The panel of guests while delivering their speech highly extolled the efforts put in by Kanthi D. Suresh for three long years, researching, brainstorming, ideating and bringing forth this channel.
Hon’ble Union Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt. Maneka Gandhi said that it is inconceivable to even think of a woman heading a sports channel in India. She heaped praises on Kanthi for bringing out such a wonderful channel that would not only provide sports entertainment but also offer a platform to aggrieved athletes to voice their concerns against any oppression. Others present on the occasion included BJP spokesperson and also NADA panel Vice-chairman Mr. Nalin Kohli, who spoke at length about sports and doping nexus.
Ms. Kanthi, during her speech, spoke about the hurdles she and her team faced right from envisaging the concept of the launching of Power Sportz. It was daunting, as people would reportedly tell Kanti about a severe lack of sports content in India. But she refused to endorse such a view because, with so many sports bodies, federations, sports ministry, state bodies, scoop for sports information would definitely be abundant. And she was right. India can be a fertile ground to generate non-stop sports infotainment, something that Power Sportz has vowed to offer.
One-stop destination for sports lovers
Power Sportz promises to be an issue-based channel that would lend its voice to sportspersons fighting any discrimination from federations, sports bodies or have been victims of nepotism. For a nation obsessed with cricket, Power Sportz also throws its weight behind all sports and athletes from other disciplines.
The brevity of the channel’s coming into existence had no bearing on what Power Sportz has already achieved. It already has quite a few milestones under the belt. When the channel came to know of the ordeal of an Indian para-athlete Isha Khassa it threw its weight around rallying behind Isha shoved by the federation to the sidelines. The social media campaign, news coverage by Power Sportz generated enough buzz among the people who came out in support of the para-athlete.
More recently, PS also got involved with Indian weightlifter Sanjita Chanu, falsely implicated in a dope case. Sanjita, who won gold in CWG for Indian was banned in May this year for alleged doping. However, the IWF exonerated Sanjita admitting its blunder of swapping samples inadvertently. Power Sportz wasted no time and sprang to its feet highlighting her plight and provided the platform to voice her concern. It was a PS exclusive, much before other channels in the country could cover. Power Sportz brought Sanjita’s exclusive interview ‘live’ to its viewers, an initiative highly applauded by many, including sportspersons.
Over one million views already
Another milestone even at this nascent stage for Power Sportz is garnering over one million hits in less than three months from launch. The channel has undeniably received the patronage of millions of viewers who come back for the non-stop dosage of sports content. People have liked Power Sportz as apparent from their constant feedback and comments in the channel’s social media platforms. The channel with its 24/7 broadcast of captivating programs has managed to strike the chord with a growing number of viewers connecting every day. Viewers have fallen in love with the mix of programs in the channel including sports news, live updates, interviews, discussion with eminent sportspersons, apart from sports trivia from across the globe.
With its wide network of journalists dispersed across the country; Power Sportz brings the latest in sports from east, west, south, and north of India. From the confines of a state-of-the-art studio equipped with the latest technology in Gurugram, Power Sportz broadcast the stream of interesting shows handled by a team of seasoned professionals.
