Whenever we step out of the house, we constantly worry about its safety. With the crime rate on the rise, it is but natural to worry about home security. To ensure holistic protection, you need to do a thorough House Risk Assessment. It not only points out the vulnerabilities around your residence but provides effective ways to overcome them.

You may consider the below-listed factors in house risk assessment:

1. Family safety

Family safety is a prime worry when a person leaves the house for the day, especially if there are small children and senior citizens in the house. They tend to be an easier target for crimes like burglary and house break-in.

If you travel for work often; you tend to worry more about the safety of your little ones and of your parents/in-laws. Sometimes, domestic help like maids can take advantage of this situation. If you have a home security system, it may help to reduce such risk factors.

2. External safety

If channels of safety/security like police stations, fire brigades, hospitals, etc. are far away from where you live, then it is something to worry about. Since calamities come uninvited, it is advisable that you take necessary precautions to ensure your family is safe.

Leave contact numbers of local hospitals, police stations, fire brigades, etc. in the phonebook at home. Also, if you have a relative or a close friend living nearby, leave a spare set of house keys with them, especially if you are away from your home for 7 hours or more.

3. Threat history

The risk level of your house automatically increases when there has been a previous case of burglary or a crime in your locality. You need to be more cautious about the safety of your house when such incidents have taken place in the past in the neighbourhood.

4. House safety

Having security guards in the building is always an added advantage. But having forms of electrical surveillance like CCTV cameras and intercom systems that connect to your flat from the security guard’s cabin, fire alarms, etc. always make your building safer.

Train your security guard to let outsiders enter the building only after checking an ID proof of the person and ensuring that the visitor writes down his name in the register of the building.

5. Internal safety

Short circuits are one of the largest causes of fires in homes. Faulty wiring, electrical fluctuations, or old wiring may cause this. Also, consider putting up CCTV cameras at every entry point of your house, if you happen to have multiple entrances to your house. Getting a dog for your safety is a good idea too.

6. Security level

Does your building/bungalow have a fence that is tall enough? This is one of the key factors to consider as intruders barge into houses mainly by climbing fences. Besides a security guard, your building should have multiple CCTVs, video door phones (VDP), intruder alarm systems (IAS) and access control systems (ACS) to ensure the building is safeguarded.

These are the 6 main factors that should be taken into consideration while doing a Home Risk Assessment. Based on the results of the assessment you need to take appropriate measures and install devices from a known security solutions provider company.
