300mm Wafer Fab capacity utilization rose to 90% in August, according to VLSIresearch. VLSIresearch said this critical rolling average has been steadily rising since hitting a bottom of 80% last February after falling from a peak of 89% in 2012. This year’s rise comes as a result of declining semiconductor equipment investments in 2012 and 2013, VLSIresearch indicated. Growing capacity tightness is prompting significant order activity in semiconductor equipment, said VLSIresearch, adding that even with more capital spending utilization rates will rise in 2014. Utilization is forecast to be tight in 2014, followed by a slight easing in 2015, according to VLSIresearch. The next cyclical decline will be in 2016, followed by a return to growth in 2017, VLSIresearch predicted.
