Intel at 22nm. . . an interview with Mark Bohr. (video)

Intel has reached another node with the technology clockwork that they are so famous for. 22nm is another milestone in Intel’s ability to get more transistors that are faster and yet, stingier with the power they use.  But this time Intel’s new transistor is truly revolutionary. Abandoning the conventional planar transistor, in use since Robert Noyce invented the Integrated Circuit in 1958, Intel is taking a 3-D Tri-Gate transistor into manufacturing. While these and similar structures have been around in labs for years, no one has been confident enough to bring them to manufacturing.

In this video, we talk to Mark Bohr, Sr. Fellow and Director of Process Architecture and Integration, at Intel, about what it all means. Mark describes how Intel’s Tri-Gate transistor differs from traditional structures. I find out why they chose to go to a 3-D structure at 22nm and what the benefits are. The most obvious of course is that it’s smaller.

Mark Bohr Biography

Mark T. Bohr is an Intel Sr. Fellow and Director of Process Architecture and Integration.  He is a member of Intel’s Logic Technology Development group, Hillsboro, Oregon, where he is responsible for directing process development activities for Intel’s advanced logic technologies.  He joined Intel in 1978 and has been responsible for process integration and device design on a variety of process technologies for memory and microprocessor products.  He is currently directing development activities for Intel's 14 nm logic technology.  Bohr is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and was the recipient of the 2003 IEEE Andrew S. Grove award.  In 2005 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.  He holds 57 patents in the area of integrated circuit processing and has authored or co-authored 47 published papers.
