Mobile signal strength, antennas, and LTE ... Lars Johnsson

Have you upgraded to LTE and wonder why you mobile device doesn’t seem much faster than 3G? Or why LTE signals are hard to find when roaming? The problem is not just that too many people are on the network. It’s also because your smartphone only has a dumb antenna. Conventional antenna technology can’t be physically tuned to deal with LTE’s broad frequency range. We find out why in this conversation with Lars Johnsson of Cavendish-Kinetics. He discusses a variable electrical load can be applied to essentially change the effective length the antenna to optimize its performance by shifting its resonating frequency. This way it is always optimally matched to the operating frequency. This improves signal strength, increases data throughput, and extends battery life, benefiting both users and carriers. While theoretically possible, it’s never been practical before. Lars discusses how that’s changed with their SmarTune™ RF MEMS device
