Manufacturing research is a growing thrust at SEMATECH. New problems are emerging as the semiconductor industry continues to ply the limits of nanotechnology. The big enemy to attack is variability: eliminate it where possible or control it where needed. New opportunities for greatly improved data analytics are also emerging. They are coming from the confluence of Cloud Computing, Big Data, IoT, and sensor technologies. As a result, SEMATECH is returning to its roots in manufacturing research to help develop these technologies for the semiconductor industry. In this episode, Dan has a conversation with Michael Lercel, who is Senior Director and Chief Technologist at SEMATECH. Michael talks about why and how manufacturing is reemerging as an area of intense research. It’s going far beyond the old TQM and statistical process control methods.
