STM hits a home run at Nokia and is TSMC going Fabless?

Last week we showed you how the news was pointing to big trouble at TI. It’s been no insider’s secret that Nokia was pretty miffed at TI for outsourcing development to Taiwan and the news was catching up to it. The bigger question was who was going to pick up the business? Well, it looks like Nokia decided to look to the southwest of Europe this time, as the news links below indicate. This is a big shot in the arm for ST, which has been pretty beleaguered with the collapse of the Crolles Alliance. Everyone had quietly started their knock-out count-downs on the company. But nothing speaks to your worthiness than winning a big-money customer . . . And Nokia is one of the most sought after business relationships in electronics.

One Atom Short of a Gate Dielectric . . One of the funniest life imitating art happenings these days is Foundries going Fablite. It comes from the news that TSMC China. So, soon you’ll have a Fabless Design House, buying from a Fabless Foundry, which gets its wafers from a real foundry. Speaking of which, did you hear the one about how you tell a developed area from and underdeveloped one? In the developed area you have two Starbucks on a corner and in the underdeveloped area you only have one. It’s a new twist of the Starbucks in the bathroom of a Starbucks. And not to be out done, one has to wonder how long it will be before our industry has a fabless company who buys from a fabless company, who buys from a fabless company, who buys from a foundry. Does anybody want to own a fab anymore???
