The New Semiconductor Growth Wave ... a conversation with Wally Rhines of Mentor

There's been a new wave of growth to hit the shores of the semiconductor industry. And it’s more than just memory. New entrants are bringing unique device architectures to market as EDA lowers the cost of design. On top of this … is the China factor, where the government is spending more than 20 billion dollars a year to stimulate their industry.  There are now over a thousand legitimate fabless semiconductor companies in China.

A few years ago, people likened the semiconductor industry to the steel industry: Mature with arthritic growth. They saw it as overburdened with infrastructure costs. And many said the cost of designing chips had become so high as to preclude start-ups. So how is what was thought to be impossible a few years ago, possible today? Dan Hutcheson has a conversation about this with Wally Rhines from Mentor, a Siemens business, where he’s President and CEO
