Intel's Process Architecture and Integration team has done what many have said couldn’t be done: the first true 10nm process headed to production. They have scaled another node with greater density and performance-per-watt. Most importantly, they did all this with lower cost-per-transistor. In other words Moore’s Law is still alive and well. Often misquoted, we find out what Mark Bohr really believes about Moore’s Law as he talks about what Intel accomplished with its 10nm technology. We discuss the correct way to measure Moore’s Law in terms of node transitions. We focus on density measures and how to achieve consistent reductions in cost-per-transistor even though the cost of manufacturing the wafer is on the rise. We also discuss how the move to SoCs and addressing the market shift a bi-annual to annual time scale is affecting the way they bring new semiconductor process technology to market.
