Summary

It is a general tactical principle that you should always look one way as you move in another especially when building a monopoly. Thats just what Oracle did and they did it brilliantly. Rarely in business strategy have I seen such a well played move, as the real direction has to be towards defending Oracles core strength: Databases. Heres the fine print strategic move: Sun owns most of the MySQL codebase, which Oracle will now own.
