Big Data and AI ... orArtificial Intelligence … You hear a lot about them being the next big thing. But what are they? ... REALLY .. And why are they so important? There has been a huge explosion of data. Especially unstructured data, which is data that doesn't fit neatly into rows and columns. Meanwhile, AI is finally becoming intelligent and not so artificial. These two factors are driving a need to change how computers actually work. IBM's has been working on these problems with a focus on what they call, "Cognitive Computing.” They see advances in semiconductors as playing an important foundational role. There is a need to drive innovation in both logic and memory technology ... And that includes everything from device structures to EUV, etcetera. The question is ... How will cognitive systems first leverage innovations at the algorithm and architecture level to accelerate deep learning. And what about new material innovations needed for neuromorphic devices? Can the power needed to accomplish these compute tasks be shrunk by several orders of magnitude. Also, can advances in cognitive computing be mirrored back into the semiconductor fab and equipment industry help them perform predictive maintenance, anomaly detection and improve fab yield? We have a conversation about this with Mukesh V. Khare, Ph.D. who is Vice President of the Semiconductor Group at IBM Research.
