Summary: GLOBALFOUNDRIES has been gaining attention for its recent achievements as a semiconductor foundry. This is especially true of its Fab 8 in Malta, New York, where first-time-right on 14nm semiconductor design tapeouts has become a rule of thumb.  Fab 8 is not just another fab. It is an American manufacturing success story. During an era when semiconductor manufacturing was shifting to Asia, GF chose to fight the tide and invest in America, building a fab in upstate New York, where no semiconductor manufacturing capability had ever been before. New York State was keen to bring them here, as they had already invested in the region with a vision of creating a new technology ecosystem as an engine for job creation. These investments were critical to GF's success.

In this conversation with Tom Caulfield, Senior Vice President and the General Manager of Fab 8, we examine what GLOBALFOUNDRIES has accomplished here. We find out what semiconductor fab management is about. What semiconductor manufacturing jobs are about and why they pay so well. We discuss the difficulties of bringing up a greenfield fab and what are the essential ingredients to be successful. Tom discusses the importance of human capital, the impact of teamwork, and how to inspire it. We also cover how the acquisition of IBM fits in and the role that GF's CEO, Sanjay Jha, has played in the turnaround.
 
Finally, we turn the table and Tom asks me what I saw in the fab and around the site.
