Description: The vast networks of electrification are the greatest engineering achievement of the 20th century. Declining public support for energy RD&D for 25 years based on DOE data. Private sector’s RD&D and capital investments are down as well. The result has been increasing outage events as transmission investment has lagged load growth. The cost of these outages follows a power law distribution, costing the U.S. economy more than $100B per year. We need to develop a smart self-healing grid.
