Description: This energy presentation is about Environmental Security and its Elements in the EU and Latin America - “The relation between the environment and the security of humans and nature”-Institute for Environmental Security. Sub-elements of Environmental Security Concept: Environmental security is environmental viability for life support, with three sub-elements: –preventing or repairing military damage to the environment–preventing or responding to environmentally caused conflicts–protecting the environment due to its inherent moral value. Renewable energy - Any energy resource that is naturally regenerated over a short time scale and derived directly from the sun (such as thermal, photochemical, and photoelectric), indirectly from the sun (such as wind, hydropower, and photosynthetic energy stored in biomass), or from other natural movements and mechanisms of the environment (such as geothermal and tidal energy).

Renewable energy does not include energy resources derived from fossil fuels, waste products from fossil sources, or waste products from inorganic sources. Green Energy Developments. How to obtain energy sources without destruction of the environment? The main alternative sources that have been identified are wind power; solar power; energy extracted from certain vegetable plants (biofuels); energy from sweet, waterfalls and dams (hydroelectric) Background in EU The importance of renewable energy use was settled in Treaty of Lisbon in 2007: –EUROPE 2020: 10-year strategy ...Please navigate Paper pages for more details.

What is Environmental
Security?
“The relation between the environment and
the security of humans and nature” Institute for Environmental Security

Sub-elements of
Environmental Security
Concept:
Environmental security is environmental viability for life
support, with three sub-elements:
– preventing or repairing military damage to the
environment
– preventing or responding to environmentally caused
conflicts
– protecting the environment due to its inherent moral
value

Renewable energy
Any energy resource that is naturally
regenerated over a short time scale and derived
directly from the sun (such as thermal,
photochemical, and photoelectric), indirectly from
the sun (such as wind, hydropower, and
photosynthetic energy stored in biomass), or from
other natural movements and mechanisms of
the environment (such as geothermal and tidal
energy). Renewable energy does not include
energy resources derived from fossil fuels, waste
products from fossil sources, or waste products
from inorganic sources.

Green Energy Developments
• How to obtain energy sources without
destruction of the environment ?
• The main alternative sources that have been
identified
• are wind power; solar power; energy extracted
from
• certain vegetable plants (biofuels); energy from
sweet
• waterfalls and dams (hydroelectric)

Background in EU
The importance of renewable energy use was
settled in Treaty of Lisbon in 2007:
– EUROPE 2020: 10-year strategy proposed in 2010
– It aims: "smart, sustainable, inclusive growth" with
greater coordination of national and European policy
– Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20%
– Increasing the share of renewable energy in final energy
consumption to 20%
– Achieving 20% increase in energy efficiency

2010 in European Union

Wind Power
• European Union aim is
to increase wind power
use
• Almost the most
environmental-friendly
way to produce
electricity
• Germany, Spain,
Denmark and the
United Kingdom

Solar Power

Solar Power
• Producing electricity
• Germany, France, United Kingdom
• Solar heating - to provide space or water
heating. Growth potential is enormous. At
present the EU is second after China in the
installations.

Latin America Situation and
Challenges
• This region faces the need to reconcile the
demands of growth with the need to protect and
properly
• manage their habitats and resources in order to
achieve sustainable development while facing
global threats
• to the environment, such as climate change.

Clean Energy Opportunities in
Latin American
• Latin America and the Caribbean have the potential to be auto
suficienty using their own sources of renewable energy
• Altough last year just 5.4 percent of the $244 trillion global
renewable energy investment went to Latin America, those
countries are already producing higher levels of clean power
• The region could even produce energy with renewables to
export, while providing jobs as well as environmental benefits.
• This represents a challenge to the region's energy model, but
also an opportunity to redefine and transform it

Brazil Example
• Brazil is considered to have the world's first sustainable
biofuels economy.
• Biofuels: The use of organic waste (biomass) of human,
agricultural and industrial, via direct combustion or by the use
of fuel gases to be drawn, wood and charcoal
• Brazil’s ethanol fuel program is based on the most efficient
agricultural technology for sugarcane cultivation in the world,
using modern equipment and cheap sugar cane as feedstock.
• The residual cane-waste is used to produce heat and power,
which results in a very competitive price

Chile Example
• The interesting thing about
Chile is how the energy
production is changing, trying
to find other ways in order to
produce clean energy.
• Hydro: These kind of centrals
characterize to their high
availability rate and low cost.
Centrals are located all over
the country

• Renewable Energy Potential:
It always has been an
important topic in Chile,
because of the use of the
hydro centrals, but there are
many other options to produce
clean energy
• Wind energy (wind power):
Coast
• Solar enery: North of Chile
(The most arid desert in the
world) Atacama Desert
• Geothermic Energy: The
Pacific Ring of Fire

Ecuador Example
Ecuador is considered to be one of the major petroleum
producers in the world.
Clean Energy:
• Hydroelectricty
• Use of solar panels
• Hybrid cars
• Wind turbines
