Architectural lighting designer would like to
use LED as the major light source in manmade environments, whenever possible
these days.
There is a need to create a meaningful way
to let the LED Lighting system to serve
everyone of us, the rich or the poor, urban
or rural, all of us can enjoy the benefit of
this new lighting technology.
We trust LED lighting system will let us
To enjoy our life better,
To be more connected to each other easier
and
To keep our world green.

Lighting design is an art that create the link
between light to our life.

LED Lighting do not have to look like what we have been seen

In the process to create elite and green light environment,
LED has been viewed as one of the better choices
In additional to artistic natural of LED appearance, ( I am not talking
about T-8 )
we do have to think about Watt/lumens, concern about CRI. Color
temperature,
And thermo management as well the budget.
we put the LED lighting system through the lighting economics check
list as well.
reservations preventing LED been specified on more projects, used in
more spaces, and more . …

We question,
How often do we need to performance any maintenance
What is that we need to replace?
Who and where can we get the replacements module, parts, or ….
How fast can we get the replacement parts
How expansive are the replacements
How would it affect the daily operation of the projects
Who will be able to do the work?

LED life? 100,000 hrs, 50,000 hrs, 30,000 hrs..

It seems we all have different ideas to “fix” or to “improve” the
conditions to make LED system more friendly,
At the same time the force from different agency wanting to
count on LED to solve the climate changing issues and amount
many other issues that we face today

Light is the essential tool for Lighting
Designer to do our job.
Lighting Designer use whatever tools to
help us to create what we need.
LED is one of the NEW tools that Lighting
designer can use.

BPI , lighting design firm has been in business to use light, lighting to
design light environment for the end user.

1966 beginning the lighting consultant business with 4000 projects
We have used all kinds of light source, and we always concern about
energy conservation on our projects

With the same attitude we entered the Asia market in
1980

1993 beginning practice in Taiwan,
again were shy on using lots of watts

From 2003, we entry the China market in Shanghai
market,

2005 beginning BPI practice in Beijing

2006 our opened an office in Guangzhou, and have used more and more LED
System

It seems most of the LED
applications are visual effect
Not functional architectural lighting
for the interior applications.

In the past 40+ years
We see Lighting Technology changes all the time, IFSB, T-17 , R-60
was what we used to use, but the goal lighting design has not
change, we try to give the best to our client.

The “Best” has changed and still changing .
The light level requirement changed many times.
Is that our eye has changed or it is the perception of light has
changed.
Or we just did not know how much light we really need to perform
the required visual task?

Large or small projects around the world are designed to meet LEED 
certification requirement.  Lighting is designed based on the lighting power 
density limits.  
This requirement made us wanting efficient light source and hope those 
efficient light source also provide the CRI and the color temperature that 
we wish to have
Is LED the answer to all?

We are trying to pack the LED in a good looking fixture and provide the proper 
distribution  to satisfied the visual performance requirement, and also be able 
to render the space and enhance the emotional need for task take place in the 
space.

CLIMATE

Chongqing belongs to sub‐tropical monsoon climate. The features are warm winter, hot summer, early spring and short autumn. 
The monsoon concentrates in summertime. The annual average rainfall is 1000‐1100mm. There is plenty of night rain in summer, 
hence the saying 'Ba mountains' night rain'. Chongqing is also called 'foggy city'. There is much fog from the end of autumn to early 
spring with at least 68 foggy days a year. 

In order to get graceful lighting effect  in foggy night, well balanced brightness control and color composition take important roles.  
Our lighting systems are planned to accommodate Chongqing's climate condition.

Despite of the great opportunity to create the urban environment which mother nature to embraces the man made creations, current day/night urban environment 
does not explore its natural beauty. No Forms & Shapes, No Balance & Harmony. This current environment provides us challenges at the same time the opportunities.

Conceptual animation simulating kinetic lighting effects from a series of  LED towers in sequence

By programming the LED control system to synchronize a series of LED walls will be a very unique visual effect and a big 
impact on people’s imagination. The integration of LED to the façade creates a inviting and attractive façade which at the 
same could be used for commercial messages animations, advertisement, logo’s and artistic color effects.
The designed resolution is for both close‐in view and at a distance, such as from high way close by, or from 靜安寺
commercial district on the east. The subjective is to induce shoppers from 靜安寺 district. Also, additional revenue by the 
advertisements could be generated.

Did LED changed the relationship between light and our life?
Will Different culture background see LED differently

We believe

LED application will be local and personal in man made environment
LED application will be portable
LED will be easier to interface with building management system, as well as smart and personal
control
LED will become light source for underdeveloped area, powered by solar

We wish

Lighting level in work space will move to lower level
There will be color temperature changing applications, but not much of RGB
There will be new distribution system for consumer to buy fixture / LED
There will be more integration between LED maker and lighting fixture maker.
The relationship between light source and fixture mfg will have stronger bond
Some level standardization will help us to use LED lighting system

We think
Design community will change the way to think of relationship of light to our life
LED will not replace other light source, but will join others on the lined up and off
