Someone in your family or in your friend circle is suffering from drug addiction; you likely want to help them. But it is important to know the signs of drug addiction and how to offer the best help to the person in need.

Drug Addiction is also called Substance dependence, is a syndrome in which a person feels a strong need for drugs. They show multiple behaviors. These include finding it difficult to control the need for drugs and the need for the drug is much more important than other things such as family, friends, and work. People start using drugs for different reasons- Curiosity, for having a good time, and because of their emotional states like anxiety and depression. Drug addiction is a complex and chronic disease that requires medical intervention to overcome.

Types of treatments

Various types of treatment help in drug treatment, including residential treatment, Addiction Counseling, medication, behavioral therapy, recovery, and sober houses, rehabilitation centers, and local support groups

1. Counseling
Counseling is the professional psychosocial consultation of individuals or groups with the aim of problem-solving or change processes within a relatively short period of time to initiate and evaluate. The cognitive-psychological intervention procedures used in counseling are deliberated to promote the ability of self-control and self-help preparedness so counselor work with discussion and intervention methods that are only partially comparable to those of psychotherapists. As a rule, the depth of intervention is lower and the approach holistic that is, the entire social environment of the clients and their support systems become more prominent.

Traditional addiction treatment is based primarily on counseling. Counseling help individuals identifying behaviors and problems related to their addiction. It can be done on an individual basis, but it is more common to find it in a group setting and can include crisis counseling, weekly or daily counseling, and drop-in counseling supports. Counseling is also related to Intervention, is a process in which the abuser's family requests help from a professional to motivate or lead addict into drug treatment or rehabilitation. This process begins with one of these professionals’ first goals: breaking down denial of the person with the addiction. Denial implies the fear to resist the true nature of addiction or lack of readiness from the patients to take any action to change their lives, other than continuing the violent behavior. Once this has been achieved, professional coordinates with the addict's family to support them in getting this family member to alcohol drug rehabilitation immediately, with concern and care for this person. Otherwise, this person will be asked to leave and expect no support of any kind until going into drug rehabilitation or alcoholism treatment. An intervention can also be organized in the workplace environment with Co-worker instead of family

2. Medication

Certain opioid medications such as methadone and more recently buprenorphine are widely used to treat addiction and dependence on other opioids such as heroin, morphine or oxycodone. Methadone and buprenorphine are preservation remedies deliberated to minimize the yearning for opiates, thereby reducing the drug use, and the risk related to it, such as disease, arrest, confinement, and death, in line with the philosophy of harm reduction. Both drugs may be used as maintenance medications or used as detoxification aids. A few antidepressants have been proven to be effective against the context of smoking and nicotine addiction and these medications include bupropion and nortriptyline. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a legally available gas used for purposes that include anesthesia during certain dental and surgical procedures, as well as food preparation and the fueling of rocket and racing engines. It’s accepted because it yields awareness-altering reaction while allowing users to avoid some of the legal issues surrounding illegitimate or illegal drugs of abuse.

Although dangerous and addictive in its own right, nitrous oxide has been shown to be an effective treatment for a number of addictions.

3. Behavioral therapy

This therapy can help people to take part in drug abuse treatment, provide motivation for them to remain self-restraint, change their attitudes and behaviors that are related to drug abuse, and increase their life skills to handle stressful circumstances and environmental cues that may trigger intense craving for drugs and prompt another cycle of compulsive abuse. These are the following numbers of Behavioral therapy that are effective in addressing substance abuse.

Types of behavioral therapy include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which seeks to help patients to recognize, avoids and copes with situations in which they are most likely to relapse.
  • Multidimensional family therapy, It is designed improves family functioning to support the recovery of the patient
  • Motivational interviewing, which is designed to increase patient motivation to change behavior and enter treatment.
  • Motivational incentives, which uses positive reinforcement to encourage abstinence from the addictive substance.

Drug addiction treatment can be a long process and the duration depends upon the need and the history of the patient's abuse. At least 3 months of treatment and longer duration are associated with better outcomes
