5 Simple Ways You Can Avoid Gum Disease

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is incredibly common, and most adults will have some symptoms of periodontal disease at some point during their lifetime. In fact, periodontal disease is the major reason why people lose their teeth, and it is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation in the gums.

Usually, healthy gums are a pale pink color, feel firm to the touch and fit snugly around your teeth. If your gums become inflamed then they tend to look swollen, their color changes from pink to red, and when you brush or floss they are more likely to bleed. When periodontal disease worsens, then your gums will begin to fit less snugly around your teeth. As a result, your teeth may begin to look longer than before because your gums will have begun to recede, exposing your tooth roots.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum inflammation is caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar which contains disease-causing bacteria. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis and is completely reversible, but all too often the very first signs of gum disease are ignored, or you may not even notice anything is wrong with your oral health. As periodontal disease worsens, and your gums begin to recede, it creates deep pockets around the base of your teeth, and the infection causes pus to build up.

Eventually, teeth become loose and will fall out or will have to be removed. What’s just as worrying about periodontal disease, is its potential effect on your general health. Clinical studies suggest that advanced periodontal disease can increase the risk for other serious health conditions which include diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and respiratory infections. The good news is that you can prevent gum disease and it’s not even that difficult. Listed below are a few simple steps you can take to enjoy better dental health.

1. Brush Often

If you want to enjoy healthy teeth and gums, brushing your teeth at least twice a day is essential. It doesn’t take very long, but you must make sure you brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time. An electric toothbrush makes it super simple to brush for the correct length of time, but if you prefer a manual toothbrush then use the stopwatch on your smartphone or pop a small timer into the bathroom. It’s well worth doing this because it’s amazingly easy to overestimate those two minutes.

2. Brush Properly

Technique matters and it’s important to brush your teeth correctly. Most plaque tends to build up around the gum line, but this is the area that is often neglected during brushing. When you have your teeth professionally cleaned, you will notice your hygienist concentrates on scraping hardened plaque or calculus from the junction where your teeth meet your gums.

To clean your teeth properly, hold your toothbrush at a 45° angle to your teeth because this will ensure that some of the toothbrush bristles reach right down to the gum line while the rest of the bristles can clean your teeth. One thing that can help tremendously is to ask your dentist or hygienist for a quick demonstration on how to brush your teeth thoroughly. Most of us learn to brush our teeth as children but never refresh these techniques as adults so it can be amazingly useful.

3. Change Your Toothbrush Frequently

Toothbrushes are cheap, but they do wear out, and must regularly be replaced every two or three months, or even sooner if you notice the bristles look worn or splayed. When a toothbrush is worn out it cannot clean your teeth properly, and it’s such an essential piece of equipment so don’t skimp and try to save a few dollars. Another thing to bear in mind is to choose your toothbrush carefully, making sure it has a small enough head to clean the teeth right at the back of your mouth. If necessary, you can even use a child-sized toothbrush if your mouth is quite small.

4. Clean in between Your Teeth

Yes, that’s right we’re talking about flossing, and you should floss in between your teeth once a day. It’s up to you whether you floss before or after brushing, or first thing in the morning or last thing at night. When using dental floss, break off a length of approximately 18 inches as you need this much to use a fresh section in between each tooth. One technique is to tie the ends of the floss together, or you can just wind each end around your middle fingers. Use your thumbs and index fingers to manipulate the floss, taking it right down to just below the gum line.

If you struggle to floss, then there are alternatives, interdental brushes or proxa brushes are available in most drugstores and are tiny Christmas tree-shaped brushes. These are very easy to use, especially if you have dental bridges or other dental appliances. They come in a variety of different sizes, and you simply insert them in between your teeth, moving them back and forth a couple of times to remove plaque and food debris from those hard-to-reach areas. Another way to floss is to use a Waterpik which squirts pressurized water in between your teeth. It’s quick and effective and can be great for anyone with dexterity issues.

5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Your dentist can provide regular preventative dental care, and most people need twice yearly checkups and professional cleanings. Some people who are more at risk of developing periodontal disease, or who have had this problem before, might benefit from more frequent visits or may want to see a periodontist for regular evaluations. It is essential to detect periodontal disease as quickly as possible, as it is much easier and quicker to treat, not to mention treatments are more cost-effective. If you do spot any problems in between visits, such as bleeding gums, then contact your dental office for advice. The sooner you receive treatment, the better the prognosis for your dental health and your general health.
