With the growing population and its dependence on nature, the natural resources of the planet are drying up faster than it can be replenished. If the rates at which we are using up the natural resources keep continuing, soon there will be a severe shortage of the most essential resources required to sustain our world. In fact, the crunch on some of the basic natural resources such as water is already being felt. As a result of this, all around the world people are trying to do their part to stop the overuse of earth’s resources so that future generations will be able to use it for years to come. The answer to this is to shift attention from non-renewable resources to renewable ones, such as wind or sunlight.

Affordable solar installation for homes is now being considered to be the smart alternative for homeowners owing to its financial benefits and its eco-friendliness. Solar installations might sound like elaborately designed machinery, but really it is based on a simple concept. The solar panels generate electricity by allowing the particles of light or photons to knock the electrons free of the atoms which are converted into electricity. The solar panels are made up of smaller units known as PV or photovoltaic cells which are responsible for the conversion of sunlight into electricity.

How do Solar Panels Work?

Solar energy has been considered to be the most promising source of alternative energy for several decades. These can be seen on roofs of houses and offices. Even industrial sectors are now shifting to solar powered machinery in order to make their operations environment friendly. Factories and other commercial establishments, harbours, airports, who have large tracts of land at their disposal is taping solar energy to compensate their energy needs.

But how do solar panels actually work? The simplest definition of the working of solar panels by enabling photons to separate the electrons from their atoms, generating a flow of electricity, has already been given above. Several units of photovoltaic cells that make up the solar panel help the process. Each one of the photovoltaic or PV cells is made from two semi-conducting material slices. Generally, the material used in affordable solar installation is silicon.

Picking the Right Solar Panel

There are three major things that need to be considered when deciding which solar panel is the right one for you. These are quality, production and durability.

Firstly, to ensure quality, you must check out things like assurances and warranties provided by the manufacturer. Like any other equipment, solar panels too might degrade with time and use, becoming less efficient. There are some manufacturers that provide an assurance of a certain threshold of power production over a particular period of time, for example 25 years. Some manufacturers also provide warranty. Most manufactures provide you with an estimate of the power generation of the electric output of the solar panel based on the size of the panel and the amount of sunlight your area and your roof receives. They also monitor the production of energy by the panel after installation. If the panel fails to deliver according to the estimate, the manufacturers test the system and look for faults and act accordingly.

Secondly, the production of the solar panel depends on a number of factors such as power tolerance, efficiency, temperature coefficient and power rating. All these are to be considered to determine the amount of power that will be produced by the panel. You may not know that the amount of sunlight your roof receives throughout the day is also a factor that determines the production of the panel. A solar panel placed on the roof of a house that is sun-lit all day may produce more power compared to the same panel placed on the roof of a house that stays under shade for a part of the day. Thirdly, the durability of the solar panel is yet another important consideration. While most affordable solar installation panels are made to be durable, there might be some problems if they are installed in areas that experience high winds and heavy rain or snow. For such areas, solar panels that are made to withstand such conditions must be installed. The support frames of panels installed in such locations will be reinforced appropriately to withstand these conditions better. Generally, there are three categories of solar panels available, standard, economy and premium.

In order to ensure that the solar panels stay ideally functional for a long time, they have to be properly maintained. Just like any other electrical gadget, it is very important to maintain a regular maintenance routine and repair and replace parts as required.
