Beneficial Exercises for Shoulder Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that describes the inflammation of a joint. Shoulder arthritis is an inflammation that affects the joints in the shoulder. The shoulder consists of three bones, the arm bone, shoulder blade, and collarbone. Also, it is made out of two joints, the glenohumeral one and the acromioclavicular one. The glenohumeral joint connects the humerus and the scapula. The humerus is the longer arm bone while the scapula is what is otherwise known as the shoulder blade. The acromioclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the shoulder blade. These two joints are the ones that can be affected by the condition called arthritis.

What causes arthritis?

Arthritis is usually a condition that is found in the elderly and its main cause is the degenerative process each body goes through with age. Younger people can develop arthritis too, however, in these cases it is due to some trauma or serious injury. Some infections at a younger age can lead to arthritis as well. One other known cause is its hereditary feature, as arthritis can be passed on within the family.

What are the symptoms of shoulder arthritis?

The first and most discomforting symptom that comes with this condition is the pain. When due to shoulder arthritis, the pain will mostly be located right where the inflammation of the joint is. If left untreated, the pain gets worse and worse very quickly. If the acromioclavicular joint is the one that is inflamed, then the pain will in most cases be felt at the top of the shoulder and may sometimes go down to the neck. The glenohumeral joint, once inflamed, starts to present itself with pain in the back of the shoulder, that most say gets worse when the weather changes. Some, more severe cases, present itself by a great lack of motion in the shoulder area.

How is shoulder arthritis treated?

The first treatment option to be considered is the non-surgical one. Your doctor will try to get rid of the pain and what's causing it in a non-invasive way first. One of the non-invasive ways of getting better after being diagnosed with shoulder arthritis is to change your posture and the way that you are using your arm and shoulder. If for example, you are doing sports or have a job that affects the shoulders severely, you might need to stop doing these certain movements and activities.

Instead, your doctor might prescribe you with special physical therapy, where professionals will teach you how to do specific exercises that will help your shoulder arthritis heal. If during this time, the pain is just unbearable, it is allowed to take pain-killers that are over-the-counter as well as anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen. Applying ice on the shoulder results to be very helpful, as well against the inflammation.

What exercises are beneficial for shoulder arthritis?

There are several exercises that tend to be very helpful to heal shoulder arthritis, respectively its symptoms and especially its pain. Going out for a ride bike is one of the easiest and most effective methods. The motions that the arm and shoulders go through, when cycling, are very helpful towards strengthening the muscles and the joints involved. Hereby it is important to make sure that the handlebars are at an appropriate level. When getting a bike, consult the professionals at the store as they can best advise you on which bike is appropriate for your body height.

If the handlebars are too low, the effect will be just the opposite and you will end up hurting the muscles and joints of the shoulders even more. If you don't have a bike or simply don't enjoy going out cycling in nature, you will profit a lot from a gym membership. At the gym, you can use machines such as the stationary bike or the elliptical to gain the same positive effect as you'd get when cycling. The treadmill and the stair-stepper are also good machines to work on, as they involve arm and shoulder motions, which strengthen the joints and muscles of the arm and shoulder.

If you still feel like cycling or going to the gym simply don't match into your current lifestyle, don´t worry! There are effective exercises that can be done from the comfort of your own home and one of them is very popular and very easy to do: push-ups! Surely, if at first, you feel like you can barely do just one, you shouldn't quit doing them. Push-ups are a type of exercise you get better at with time. Also, you can start by doing wall push-ups instead of floor push-ups.

Wall push-up put less pressure on the joints of the shoulder, which in case of shoulder arthritis, are already inflamed. Starting with wall push-ups and working yourself up to the floor ones is one of the easiest and most comfortable methods. In fact, push-ups are a great exercise for the entire body and all of its muscles, which is why when doing them, you'll most likely not need any other exercise.

Other exercises that are recommended for shoulder arthritis patients are yoga and walking. Yoga helps build flexibility of the muscles, as well as strength. Yoga will allow you to strengthen your upper body by using simply your own body weight, making it safer for patients with shoulder arthritis.

A simple walk every day can also be very healing, but will only work if you watch your posture at all times. It is important to keep your shoulders back and stand tall. If you do so, you will be able to burn off your shoulder pain, as well as body fat. Walking and staying active is a great way of decreasing any inflammation, swelling or stiffness of all joints of the body.

By trying these exercises and finding out the one that works best for you, you will be able to get rid of that arthritis pain in a natural, non-invasive way. It is important to stay consistent and keep exercising regularly. Only in this way will you be able to avoid invasive procedures that come with risks, such as surgical ones.
