A bed is an essential commodity in any home. Everyone requires the contentment of a bed after a tiring day. It is that comfortable place where you repose all your worries and give your body the rest it desires. The idea of having a comfortable sleep always relates to a comfortable bed. Buzzfeed says that people can function normally on insufficient sleep or sleep deprivation, but there is a high risk of making rash decisions. So the estimated hours of sleep (almost 6 to 8 hours a day) should be completed.

There are a lot of beds currently available in the market. They come in a variety of colours, sizes, storage etc that would go with any decor. Improper sleeping arrangements can cause insomnia. Most modern beds consist of softly cushioned mattresses either on strong wood or a sprung base. There are varieties of bed sizes to select from like:

It is easy to find beds for large rooms. An entire room may be dedicated for the bed, but for rooms with a space crunch, it is not that easy. But even the smallest of beds should be comfortable. The key is to get the right bed and mattress. Interior and decor showrooms are now designing beds for the small rooms as well, with numerous options to choose from.

Some of the beds that can easily fit in any small rooms:

Bunk bed

Bunk beds are one bed frame stacked up on another. Bunk beds allow two or more people to sleep in the same room hence maximising floor space. This type of bed is mostly used on ships and in army barracks. They are also used in hostels, dormitories and prison.

These beds have support on four sides and a ladder to climb on the upper bed. Bunk beds are installed with safety railings for children. They also have privacy curtains for the lower bed. Bunk beds also come in a variety of colours for children. These beds are placed near the wall.

Loft bed

Loft beds are similar to bunk beds. They also have a ladder to climb to the upper bed. Unlike the bunk bed, the lower area does not consist of a bed. It makes space for storage. If children are having a loft bed, the lower area is either used for study table or to store books or other storage. Loft beds and bunk beds are kept against the wall hence the floor area is free to move or display another piece of furniture. The below space can also be used as a reading area or for storing clothes.

Adjustable bed

An adjustable bed is a bed that is multi hinged lying surface that can be projected into a number of positions. These beds are mostly viewed in hospitals but personal or home care beds are cushioned and look nothing like the ones in the hospitals. They home care beds have been on the market for almost three decades.

The common adjustments in the bed include raising the upper and lower body independently of each other. Height adjustments and tilting of beds are also possible. These beds can also be folded and stored. This saves space. The bed can be folded out when required. The market for motorized adjustable beds has been increasing as they are being promoted as comfort and lifestyle choice.


Airbed, also known as an air mattress or blow up bed is an inflatable mattress made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Now they are also made of plastic and rubber. This mattress is best for space crunch because they can be folded, stored or even carried easily.

There are two main categories these beds are made for:

  1. Camping or guest purpose
  2. Home usage

For camping purposes, these beds are made lightweight with reduced size. The bed would be inflated through a value either by mouth or foot powered pump. For home usage, an air chamber is used for inflation. It has two air chambers, which allows both individuals to independently blow air for their side of the bed.

Air beds are made lightweight so that it can be washed and dried as and when required.

Air bed also has a health benefit. It provides relief to people suffering from back pain. They can adjust the firmness of the bed easily. Air beds are not suitable for infants. The airbed proves to be soft for infants and can suffocate them. Hence air beds made of organic chemicals are also made to prevent allergies in children or other sensitive individuals.

Futon bed

A futon is Japanese traditional bedding. A futon bed set consists of a mattress (generally cotton stuffed) and duvet. The set can be followed and stored easily. The western- style futons are different from the Japanese Futons. They come with wooden sofa beds. They are often slatted and stored on a slatted frame. Futon beds are usually thin making it easy to dry. The pillows used with the futon are generally small in size.

SofaCum Bed

The comfort provided to you 24*7. They are also called as a sleeper sofa. Sofa beds are helpful in saving space. They are sofa by day and bed in the night. Sofa beds also come in various sizes and colours. The beds are either as fixed back or loose pillow. Many decor manufacturers also provide the option of customisation as per your requirements. Spring, foam or pocket coil mattresses are used.

Camp or cot bed

Camp beds also called as cot are a substitute for permanent beds. These beds are compact, lightweight and portable. They are mostly used by the army and in tourism. It allows easy accommodation. They are either made of wood or steel frame, covered with canvas, linen or nylon. Camp beds are easy to store, wash and dry.

Murphy bed

Murphy bed is also known as pull down bed, wall bed and fall down the bed. They were named after their inventor William Murphy. These beds have been around for almost a century. These beds save space because they can be pulled from a wall for sleeping and then put back. This bed was designed especially for small apartments. Murphy beds are designed to fit your needs.

Day bed

Day beds are used as beds as well as for lounging, reclining and seating purposes. There are indoor and outdoor day beds. The frames can be made either of wood or metal or combination of both. Day beds are a cross between chair, couch and bed. Seating capacity can also be extended. These beds can both be hanged (on the ceiling) or stable (near the wall) and provide storage beneath. Infant beds can also be converted to day beds by lowering railings on one side.

Another type of day bed is a Camp day bed. These are mostly beneficial in studio apartments. It is actually a couch with a sleeping bag with cushion.

Built in beds

These beds are built in where there is a free area for example, near the window. The space around the bed can be maximized by adding storage area on all four sides. It can also be used as a seating area. Another advantage is getting up to a great view everyday in the morning. Elevated beds are designed for storage. Elevated beds can be incorporated with built in beds for more maximization of storage. It can also be called as the living cube. A trundle bed can also be used. It is stored in a normal bed. They are wheeled out for use by a visitor or as another bed.

So here are some of the beds that you can choose if you have a small room. The main idea is to focus on the area of the room. Most of the beds provide storage hence plan accordingly. Many furniture manufacturers will provide customisation as per your needs. Measure your room pre-hand. You can even consult interior designers at any showroom to plan your room for you. Choose the furniture, tell them your idea and get your dream room. Remember to keep the room uncluttered. Another tip, invest in good cushions or pillows as per your convenience.
