Crazy Eight Card Game

Crazy Eight, as the name suggests, is one of the craziest games you’ll get to play with the cards. Like most famous card games, this game was originated sometime in the 1930s in the US. This game, however, has an interesting derivation. Are you all familiar with the ‘Section 8’ concept of the United States Army? Basically, a military person or army man was discharged from his services if he was found to be ‘mentally unfit’ to be a soldier. Hence, Crazy Eight was found at the military base, hence getting its name. How exactly this is relatable, you ask? Get to know the rules of the game, and you’ll understand. In this article, you’ll know exactly how to play crazy eight, and be familiar with the concepts and Crazy Eight rules.

We’ve tried to keep the understanding level of this article to the basic school mode. We’re sure everybody who reads this will have a complete and thorough understanding of this game and all its rules, that is, the Crazy Eight Rules! So, let’s waste no more time and start getting to know the Crazy Eights rules, or Crazy 8 rules, as some people spell it by.

Crazy 8 Rules

Firstly, let’s get familiar with the basic concepts of the Crazy Eight card game. It is played between 2-5 players and a regular 52-card deck is needed for it. However, if more players are there, more cards are needed, depending on the needs and the number of players. So, to start off with, shuffle the pile of cards and choose a dealer. Deal five cards to each player, and keep the discard pile somewhere around the middle. Now, pick the first card and put in the center, near the discard pile. Make sure the card is not an 8, as it is not allowed according to Crazy Eight rules.

Now, the player to the left of the dealer will start the round. Make sure the play goes clockwise only. Now, for example the first card is a three of the heart suit. So, the player who will start the round can put either a three or any other card of the same suit (in this case, the heart) on top of that. Similarly, the players following the first player will adhere to the same concept, that is, putting a card of the same suit or the same number on top of the card already there in the middle. Remember that eight (of any suit) is a wild card and can be used on top of any card to change the suit.

How to Play Crazy Eight Card Game?

Now that you are familiar with the concept of the game, you might be wondering, “Okay, now I know the concept, but how to play Crazy Eight card game, or how or go about it?”. So, now we’ll tell you how to exactly go about it. Basically, you need to complete the round by finishing off all the five cards as soon as possible, in your hand. So, after one of the players complete the round, the others calculate their points according to the kinds of cards left in their hand.

The points are based on the number in the cards and go about like this. If an eight numbered card is left, it counts for 50 points. If either 10, J, Q or K remain, 10 points are added. If the ace is remaining a point is added. Finally, if any of the other remaining cards remain (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9), they go about the same as the pip value.

After the end of each round, scores and points calculated. At least one of the players will score 0 points, as they don’t have any cards remaining and hence finished the round. The points of the rest of the players are calculated using the other charts. Remember, the lesser the points you have, the more is the chance of winning the game. The rounds keep on going about like this till one of the players reaches 100 points, who hence finishes last. Now, the scores of the other players are calculated and the player with the least number of points wins the game!

That’s just about how easy and interesting the game is. We hope we taught you the Crazy Eight rules with precision and that you have understood everything you needed to know about this game. Go for the win!
