The checkers game is called “draughts” in some countries. Checkers is an extremely simple and fun game to play. This game dates back to 12th century and has a fascinating history. Checkers game is a subject of interest for computer programmers because it is the game of mathematical possibilities.

Basics of Checkers

Checkers game is always played between two players. You need a standard 64 squares board, that has alternating 32 dark and 32 white squares. The checkers game board is placed such a way that each player has a light square on the right side corner closest to him or her. The checkers or pieces can be colored black and white or red and white. Each player starts the game by placing 12 colored pieces or checkers on 12 dark squares in the three rows closer to him or her. The player with black discs takes first turn and moves are alternated between players.

The Objective of Checkers Game

The objective for each player in checkers game is to capture all of the opponent’s checkers or to block the opponent in such a way that he or she has no available moves.

Rules of Checkers Game

  • According to checkers rules, players can move a checker one space diagonally forward. It is not possible to move checker backward until it becomes king. If a jump is possible, the player has to take a jump compulsorily. A jump is a capturing move.
  • If you find one of your opponent’s checkers on a forward diagonal next to one of your checkers, and the next diagonal space beyond the opponent’s checker is empty, then your checker should make a jump and land in the empty space. This way you capture your opponent's checker and remove it from the board.
  • When you make one jump and another jump is possible for your checker from its new position, then your checker should make that jump too. It must make all the possible jumps until there is no jump left as per checkers rules.
  • If you observe that more than one of your checkers has jumps available at the start of your turn, then you must decide which checker you will move. Once you choose the checker, it should take all the possible jumps.
  • When one of your checkers reach the opposite side of the board, it is crowned and hence becomes king. To distinguish the king from other checkers, place one of the captured pieces on top of it. Unlike normal checkers, a king can move forward as well as backward as per checkers rules. A kind should also make all the jumps that are possible for it and a king is allowed to jump over only one opposing checker at a time. There is no limit to the number of kings you can have in a checkers game.

How Does the Checkers Game End?

  • The game of checkers ends when one of the following scenarios occurs:
  • the player who is first to lose all his or her checkers loses.
  • If the player is blocked by the opposite player in such a way that they cannot move, they lose the game.
  • When both players have the same number of pieces, the player with more number of kings is a winner.
  • If both players have the same number of pieces and same number of kings, the game is a draw.

Tips for Winning Checkers

  • Try to capture your opponent's checker instead of focusing all your attention in defending your own checkers. Never miss an opportunity to capture your opponent's checker.
  • Move your checkers together. When your checkers move together and form a blockade, it becomes difficult for the opponent to capture your checkers.
  • Keep a full back row to keep your opponent from crowning his or her checker.
  • Focus on crowning as many checkers as you can, kings have a significant contribution in making you a winner.
  • Checkers is a very simple game but still winning is difficult in this game. You might fail in the starting but don’t give up. Regular practice will make you champion in this game.

Happy Gaming!
