The processing of raw agricultural produce into food products that are acceptable for human consumption are known as Food Science. It is the study of the concepts underlying food processing and biological, chemical and physical makeup of food. In order to make the raw materials available on our supermarkets, food scientist possesses the skills necessary to convert these raw materials into the safe, attractive food products and beverages. They are responsible for the nutrition of processed foods safety, taste, and acceptability.

Raw foods are converted into beverages, cereals, dairy products, meats, poultry, fish and seafood products, fruit and vegetable products, snacks convenience foods, and animal foods which is worked by the food scientist in food or food ingredient processing plants. The market research, quality assurance, food safety, basic research, packaging, product development, and processing are concentrated by the food scientists. The development of safe nutritious foods and innovative packaging.

Development of Food Science

The history of food science began when humans transitioned from nomads to farmers when Food processing was launched about 2 million years ago. Leading to practices such as, agriculture cattle domestication and growing fruit, which helped our ancestors survive through difficult times. Fermenting, preserving with salt, drying and other primitive forms of food processing, allowed groups and communities to form and survive during prehistoric times. Due to a need for longer shelf life, the growth of the human population and advancement in civilization led to the first processed foods.

Thus making the humans first learn how to cook food, how to transform, how to preserve, and finally how to store it safely. When food was less abundant people needed to be able to store food. Thus the modern food processing was led by experience‐based technology. Processed food, such as wine and bread were favorable because they lasted longer in the early times. Earlier little attention was paid by consumers to food technologies. The food production chain gets complicated and long. The consumers become uncertain about the determinants of food quality and safety and find it difficult to understand them.

Importance of Food Science

Keeping our food supply safe and to offer options to our consumers that are healthy is the main purpose of food science since through agricultural, industrial stages and hunter-gatherer, the world has progressed to being a provider of goods and services. In order to help society, overcome hunger and disease, food processing and science have evolved to make it the basis of a healthy civilization, improve safety, affordability and availability of foods, convenience and, nutrition. It is a way of bringing a variety of foods that are healthy and affordable to a large audience. In order to feed our ever-growing population which has now reach tremendously, the domestication of plants and animals has started, the majority of which are no longer connected to their food or even familiar with the general agriculture production practices

Importance of Food Science

In order to transform raw food materials and ingredients into consumable food available through food science and technology, the application of many disciplines is applied. Education is provided for enhanced food safety, nutrient deficiency-related diseases, decreased home food-preparation time, reduced food waste, food meal convenience options, and efficient global food distribution and consistent quality in agriculture.

Food Science as a Career

With the rising options in career, food science has also booming career option this day. After completing your bachelors, you can opt for a Food Science degree. You can even do Food Science after your masters or PH.D. You need to have communication, critical thinking, observation, data analysis, and math skills to pursue food science as a career. The average salary that you can earn is $72,030 per annum. It’s a four-year program after the completion of which you analyze data about crops and conduct experiments and food production method. Sometimes this work involves traveling to farms and other specific sites to obtain samples also.

Conclusion:

Thus, food science is becoming an important aspect in terms of food safety, health assurance and even career growth.
