Go Fish Game

Go Fish is one of the most popular card games in the world. The best part of this game, other than the simplicity of it, is the fact that it can be played with any kind of a deck – French, Anglo or American. The short time which is required to play the game is also a decisive factor in the popularity of this game. The game, usually, takes about 5-15 minutes. It is, as usual, played with a regular 52-card deck. The suits of the cards in the deck do not matter in this game – it’s all about the numbers. With A being the highest and 2 being the lowest, this game is carried out in the simplest way ever.

So, what are Go Fish rules, you ask. Don’t worry. We’ll get there. Let’s give you a quick background check first. The basic skills required to go about playing this game is a strong and quick decision making, followed by a tendency of remembering things or having a good memory. This game needs of minimum of two players. Having said that, don’t play with more than ten players as well. Anyone above the age of four can play this game. If you know how to play ‘Happy Families’, you’ll know how to play this game easily! Enough with the background, now let’s begin stating Go Fish rules, shall we?

How to Play Go Fish?

Basically, the main objective of the game is to win the most ‘books’ of cards. A four of a kind is known as a ‘book’. What is a four of a kind, you ask? Well, if you get four cards of the same number, it is referred to as a four of kind. For example, if you got four Ks of Js or 8s or any other card between A and K, you achieve a four of a kind. So, well, your primary effort is to make the most number of four of a kinds, and hence, the most number of books.

To start off the game, decide the dealer. If the dealer is pre-decided, well and good. However, if it’s not, you can deal yourselves a card each. The player with the lowest card has to become the dealer. So now, after the dealer is decided and everything, he/she will shuffle all the cards and deal 5 cards each to every player. After the dealing, the player on the dealer’s right cuts them and starts off with the game.

The players basically need to ask for cards from his fellow players to complete their four of a kind. You need to have a minimum of one card of the kind you’re asking from the other player. For example, if you want to make a four of a kind using 4 and you ask one of your fellow players for the same, you should have at least one number 4 card in your existing hand. Similarly, if you ask for the card you want from the fellow player, he/she should give all the cards of that kind to you at once.

If the player cannot provide you with one, it can only be so if he/she doesn’t have one in his/her hand. Bluffing is prohibited in this game. Hence, the player will say ‘Go Fish’, which means you’ll have to look for the card you want by picking up a card from the discard pile. If the player gets one or more cards he asked for from one of the players, he/she has to ask the same or another player for the same or another card. His turn continues till he makes a catch. If the player cannot make his catch, the turn passes to the player to his left.

The game ends when all the thirteen books are completed and won by the respected players. The player who owns the most number of books is the winner of the game. If one of the players are left without a card, he can use the discard pile. If there are no cards in the discard pile, he/she is out of the game.

So, this all you need to know about Go Fish rules. Now that you know them all, we wish you all the best for your next time. Hope you win!
