History of Go

Let’s learn about the history of go. It is said that this game was originated in China in ancient times. But there are myths about its origin. Go is an ancient board which was used by Chinese astrologers to tell fortunes to others. There was also one believe that this game was designed with an intention to teach. The Chinese Emperor Yao designed it for his son to teach concentration, manners, and balance. It is also said that the Chinese general used pieces of stone to map positions for an attack on the rivals. Let’s talk about how to play go?

How to Play Go?

Let’s talk about the stones. The pieces which are used as black and white lens-shaped disks are called stones. There are two types of black and white. The black has 181 stones whereas white has 180 stones. Stones are split into two players. One player goes with black stones and the other player takes white stones. The player who chooses the best black stones referred to as black and the player with the white stones referred to as white. The player who owns black stones always starts the game and supposed to make the first move and the player who has white stones make the second move. Afterward, both players make their moves by turns. Both players make their moves on an intersection. A player is allowed to play on an unoccupied intersection. A player is not permitted to move a stone which is already being used.

In diagram 2 the stones earn 4 points of territory. The game is called off when all empty points are surrounded by a player. If you talk about diagram 4 points differ. White possesses 34 points and black possesses 31 points.

Suppose, you place a stone inside the territory and it is surrounded by you can cost one point. If you find the stones of the same color on the same intersection can be connected and form a group. The connection may have a horizontal or vertical type. If there is an empty space near the stone is called liberties. A single stone has four liberties. In case a player place a stone has always one liberty.

Placing a stone on all liberties of the stone a player is able to capture the rival’s stone. The captured stone is eliminated from the board and placed by the player who will capture that stone. In the end, all the captured stones are put in the rival’s territory will lessen the scores. If a player captures a stone he will get two points.

According to diagram 5, a black stone can eliminate three white stones as white stones have no liberties. In diagram 6, you have still one liberty left and black should fill it first. There is only one stone inside a group of stones is called an eye. If you want to capture a group, all liberties will be filled with stones. According to diagram 7, there is a single empty space inside the white group create an eye. In diagram 8 black can be placed on the empty place and the remaining white stones are going to be captured.

Two eyes:

As per the diagram 9, all stones can be captured except two eyes as those eyes cannot be filled. If you place a stone on one eye, the group will still remain alive as it has a second eye. In diagram 10, black can place a stone in the eye of white and can capture the white stone and will be eliminated. White can place a stone in the eye of black (diagram 13) and can capture the black stone. You will have diagram 10 again when you remove the black stone. You can name this situation “Ko”

A Seki:

In diagram 14 and 15, in case of the play by white, the black could capture the white group completely. In the event of black uses one stone and then White can capture the black group and eliminate it. No player should make their moves here. This situation is known as a “Seki”

At the end of the game, no players will get points as the empty points are covered by any side.
