Ideas on Creating a Great Work Environment

No one likes feeling distracted and overwhelmed when trying to be productive or finish a major project. While there are some obvious distractions to your work such as spending too much time on social media, there are others that are more subtle. Often these more subtle distractions can come from your work environment. Below are some ideas on how to make your work environment more conducive to being productive. These ideas will apply to you whether you work in a cubicule, an office, or your house's patio.

Noise Level

Different people can tolerate different noise levels and still be productive in their work. Some people need complete silence in order to be able to concentrate. Others actually prefer working in a busy and louder environment. Music can help, but sometimes, especially if trying to write or read, working with music that has lyrics can be very distracting.

Whatever is the case for you, it is important to find what noise level works for you. It may be the case that you need to have noise or other people around you in order to work well. If this is the case, I suggest working in a busy cafe setting. If you prefer a more quiet setting for you work to get done in, I would suggest the library. If you cannot change your work location or the surrounding noise but still want someway to help manage noise levels, maybe consider using either earplugs or headphones, depending on what noise level you need. White noice can also be found through different sources on the internet.

Bring In Plants

This suggestion comes from Jacquelyn Smith's article in Forbes. According to Sherry Burton Ways, an author who was referenced in the article, plants can have a great effect on your work environment. Besides their visual appeal, Burton Ways claims that plants have "been proven to reduce absenteeism, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase positive feelings, lower noise levels, decrease room temperature and lower humidity." Thus, there are many benefits to having plants in the workplace, beyond their simple beauty. That being said, make sure that you are not allergic to any of the plants you are thinking of bringing into your workplace, as this could just make the situation worse.

Keep it Clean

Keeping your workspace clean can cover two issues: tidiness and being bacteria-free. Keeping your workplace tidy can help many people concentrate much better. Instead of being distracted by random items or papers scattered all over your workspace, try organizing it. By bringing some organization to your workspace, you can help make your day to day operations run more smoothly and can help you be more productive in your work overall. You would be surprised by how distracted someone can get when there is no order around them.

The second area of keeping your workspace clean actually deals with keeping it bacteria-free. By having your work area cleaned regularly, you can help ensure that no one gets sick. As you may expect, anything from a broken AC to old food particles can make people sick in the workplace. Consider setting up a regular cleaning schedule, and think about including using a steam carpet cleaner for the floors. There is no use in you or any other workers getting sick due to something that is preventable. So make sure to keep your workplace bacteria-free.

In the end, we all want a workplace that enables us to be productive and work without being constantly distracted. While we may be well aware of certain obvious distractions at work that are slowing us down, there are more subtle ones that may slip by unnoticed. One thing that may be distracting you without you even realizing it is your workplace environment. Hopefully the ideas above have helped give you some ideas to improve your own workplace environment. Remember: monitor the noise level, consider bringing in plants and keep your workplace clean.
