Learning is Not Linear- How to Deal with It?

Every university or school formulate a curriculum for all the students of a class but unfortunately, they do not realize that learning is not a linear trend. Every student has a different learning capability which needs to be considered by a teacher in every classroom, similarly, every teacher has a different method of teaching and same time allocation for every class is just not fair. The curriculum and timetable structure has been the same for decades and bringing changes in this structure is quite difficult. We cannot completely blame the school also as a particular syllabus needs to be finished in a given amount of time and they need to stick by this but students who are not able to cope with this teaching system are the most affected.

Given below are certain methods of addressing this problem effectively;

Learning Outside of the School:

Learning is not just confined to memorizing a chapter or finishing the syllabus, the main objective of learning is to stimulate the mind. The real world can teach a child more than a textbook can.

A conventional teaching is all about repetition and memorizing the syllabus, but it does not teach the students to think critically and does not enhance their problem solving and decision-making skills.

Outdoor learning means recreational activities such as outdoor play, adventure activities, environmental education. This can stimulate young minds and enhance their personal growth. Following a curriculum is fine but other than that a child needs to also learn outside of the school.

Encouraging Interest:

Each child has a specific field of interest and most probably they will be really good at it. One child might be interested in Maths whereas another child would be more interested in learning Chemistry. Other than subjects’ children can also be interested in arts and sports.

Parents sometimes unload their interests on their children. If they are interested in let’s say football, they would want their kid to learn the same despite the fact that the kid wants to join a dance class. If the child is not interested in playing that game, it will make him/her uncomfortable and narrow the channel of communication between the child and the parents. Also, as the child has no interest in playing the game, the child’s mind will not stimulate much, and this does not really help in uplifting the child’s development.

Encourage the child to learn more about their field of interest, get them extra books let them watch educational videos. This will mentally stimulate the child and help in overall development.

Project-Based Sessions:

Learning from textbooks is a linear way of learning. Students should be given real-time projects based on each chapter they read. Reading a chapter makes no sense if the students do not learn the real-life applications. Having more labs in school and project-based learning is a very good strategy to teach students the application of a chapter.

Students need to be actively engaged when it comes to project-based learning which helps them get a deeper knowledge of the subject. The students tend to remember such practical learnings longer than textbook learning. Project-based learning also involves learning in teams which improves the team-work and communication skills of the students. For a project-based learning, students need to do a lot of study and research which helps them to learn extra information than they would have learned by just reading the textbook.

Project-based learning also requires students to use technology effectively which further improves their knowledge of the computer, electronic devices, video cameras, etc. This is quite important as the use of technology is unavoidable in today’s world.

Virtual-Visual Learning:

Other than textbook learning, encourage students to watch educational videos and download online educational apps. These apps focus on explaining subjects with lots of models and images. Visual stimulation can help kids learn in an effective way when compared to learning from uni-dimensional books.

Education videos have the combination of audio narration and visual content which helps the students to grasp the information more easily than any conventional form of teaching. Another advantage of such educational videos is that it lets you pause and rewind the content which helps the students to replay the part they do not understand easily. In a conventional classroom, a student might feel conscious to ask the teacher to repeat a topic, moreover, there is a time constraint of a period as well.

Further, technologies like 3D-printing, Virtual Reality, and Artificial Intelligence can improve the quality of education. Students can get a more real-time experience by using these advanced educational tools.

Extra Tuitions for Slow Learners:

Following a curriculum can be tough for the students as each student is different. One student may follow the class easily whereas another student might struggle. It becomes quite difficult for a teacher to balance the learning rate of all the students along with finishing off the syllabus. Teachers can compensate for the education gap by taking extra classes for the slow students. Innovative teaching techniques such as visual aid or online learning can also be encouraged for such students. Further, encouraging and motivating such students will push them to perform better. After all, every student has the right to get equal learning opportunities.

Our education system is one-dimensional and linear. Changing the way, the system works is not going to happen soon but by making changes in the way a school teaches can make a big difference in the development of the students.
