Load Test Tools for Performance Testing

As with the Functional Test Automation tools on this portal, the order of the following load and performance testing software vendors is not an evaluation of the tools and is of a random nature.

This overview of load test tools and performance test software makes no claim to completeness. If a specific load test software is missing, we look forward to receiving information.

HP LoadRunner

from Hewlett-Packard Company

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Commercial, very extensive test suite. Everything is covered by standard cases such as web, desktop applications, mobile apps and testing via API interfaces.

License:

  • Free version up to 50 virtual users available (without time limit!)

  • Otherwise charged

Description, recommendation

The load and performance test tool were originally marketed by Mercury Interactive. Then taken over and further developed by HP. HP Load Runner is included in the optional HP Performance Center, which enables, for example, project-global distribution of load generators and controllers.

Load Runner handles extensive protocols such as web applications, desktop and mobile applications. Tests on API interfaces and AJAX applications are also functional. Due to the high cost, it makes more sense for project-global use in large companies. A connection to HP ALM is of course possible.

Silk performer

from Micro Focus Borland

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Besides HP LoadRunner, the second very extensive load test tool. Starting with support for standards such as web applications, desktop applications, Citrix, mobile apps and testing via API interfaces to many types of protocols, there is a great deal of support.

License:

  • Free 45 day trial

  • Otherwise charged

Description, recommendation

The Silk Performer was developed by Segue and then went to Borland. Most recently, Borland and the Silk Performer (and the entire "Silk" product range) went into the software house Micro Focus.

Similar to HP LoadRunner, the Silk Performer offers a diverse range of applications and supported protocols. The monitoring is also extensive and customizable to a large extent, as counters of all kinds can be queried with their own scripts. Many application types are supported, be it web applications, desktop or mobile applications. Tests via API interfaces are also supported by this load test software. There are also extensions for SOA support.

Despite the large range of functions, the load test tools, an evaluation for their own needs and the special application in the test are not sufficient, as with any other. Similar to the HP LoadRunner, the Silk Performer is more suitable for project-global use in large companies due to the high costs.

NeoLoad

from Neotys

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Neoload is focused on web applications and mobile apps, supporting a broad range of technologies at the HTTP / HTTPS protocol level.

License:

  • Time unlimited full version to 50 virtual users available.

  • Otherwise chargeable

Description, recommendation

Modern and good load test tool for stress tests and load and performance tests. Stresses GUI and goes beyond scripting languages. This has clear advantages and disadvantages. Makes a good impression on web application performance tests or HTTP / HTTPS interfaces. Also suitable for web services.

Load Generators as Cloud Service (SaaS) are supported. A very clear performance test tool, which also supports the evaluation and reporting layer.

Software

Jmeter

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Jmeter supports standard web applications and web services. Furthermore, there are many plugins, so that also Flash / Flex / Air finds support.

License:

  • Free - Open Source

Description, recommendation

Jmeter is the best known and most used load and performance tool, with the largest community and a lot of plugins. Jmeter is open source and written in Java. In contrast to commercial load testing tools, the training period is higher.

Jmeter is very variable and flexible and can run without GUI. Scripts can be created with UI or in script files. Since Jmeter is Open Source and you can write additional plugins, there are no limits to the intended use. However, the effort for many applications is higher than in suitable commercial load testing tools.

In contrast to commercial load test software, the evaluation and reporting layer is kept very simple and simple and offers only the most necessary options. It is advisable to develop a suite to evaluate the results, at least in longer software projects. But this may also be advisable in commercial load testing software. Hardware monitoring options are not included.

An extensive, commercial add-on to Jmeter is Blazemeter. Blazemeter can be used as a cloud service to generate load from various load generators worldwide. Furthermore, Blazemeter offers functions for evaluating and reporting the measured data. Also at the level of load profiles is supported. Blazemeter is a good but paid supplement to the free load test tool Jmeter.

LoadUI / LoadUI Web / LoadComplete

from SmartBear Software

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Supported technologies:

  • Versatile use in web applications and web services

license

  • Free trial versions (14 days) or minimized versions with no time limit available.

  • Otherwise charged

Description, recommendation

LoadUI is a test automation tool for performance testing of web services and web applications. LoadComplete (formerly LoadUIWeb) can also be used for Web applications in general and Web Services. The demarcation of both load test tools is very intransparent, although the test tools themselves are in no way bad.

I can combine LoadUI / LoadComplete very well if SoapUI is also used as a functional test tool. Load test in LoadUI can be changed dynamically. Also provides support in evaluation and reporting.

WebLoad

from radview

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

License:

  • Like many other tools, automation over HTTP / HTTPS protocol or DOM levels. WebLOAD tends to be compatible with many browser and backend technologies.

  • Also available as a free trial version. WebLOAD Free Edition.

  • Otherwise charged

Description, recommendation

In addition to HTTP / HTTPS protocol levels, WebLOAD also offers a DOM-based "Capture and Replay". All standards of a load and performance tool, such as data correlation support, results reporting, and more, are supported by WebLOAD.

  • There is a 20-day Trial Trial with a limit of 20 VU for both.

Description, recommendation

WAPT is a commercial load and performance tool for web applications. Belonging to the cheap performance test tools on the market, which does not mean that this load test tool is not good. WAPT offers great functionality and is also available as a cloud version.

As a commercial load testing software, CloudTest focuses on currently focused technologies for mobile apps and web applications. In addition to the load test tool, SOASTA also offers load test consulting. The IT consulting in the "load and performance test" segment is in addition to the distribution of the test tool in the focus of SOASTA. As the name CloudTest suggests, load generation is also provided via Cloud Services (SaaS).

Tools for evaluation, visualization and reporting, as with all commercial and sophisticated performance test suites, are part of the scope of the tool.

Load Impact

Silk QALoad

from Micro Focus Borland (formerly Compuware QALoad)

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:

Description, recommendation

In addition to the Borland Silk Performer, Micro Focus also has QALoad, formerly of Compuware, united under its roof. QALoad was then renamed "Silk QALoad". Silk Performer and Silk QALoad are currently both load and performance tools from Micro Focus.

Although QALoad is not a bad test tool, it does not outstrip the Silk Performer, which we would rank better for many use cases. In the end, a general evaluation of load and performance tools is of course not enough.

Loadster

from Loadster Performance

Information about the license, technology, interfaces:
