This article is all about Ludo rules, history and winning strategies. Let’s have a look at how was ludo invented…

History of Ludo Game

India rediscovered Pachisi in 6th Century. It’s a sqaure and circle board game which originated in Medieval India. Even this game was evolved from a very old game of Chausar played at the times of Mahabharata.

Its latest version as we know today is called Ludo and was played during the times of Mughal Emperors in India (at the times of Akbar). Ludo is played with different names in different countries like- “Chińczyk” in Poland, “Parchís” in Spain, “Parcheesi” in North America, “Parqués” in Colombia and many more…

Description of Ludo Board Game

Bright Yellow, green, red and blue are the most common colors of Ludo board. These colors indicate the special areas in the board. Each player is assigned a color and the same color token respectively.

The board is normally square shaped with play-area of cross-shaped. Each arm of board has 3 columns with 6 squares each. The middle column is coloured with the player’s assigned color (called home of the player). The sixth coloured square not on the home column is the starting point for the player.

At the centre of the board, there is a large finishing square with colouring triangles (seems like “arrows” pointing to finish). Apart from the actual physical ludo board game, now you can play ludo game online on your computers or mobiles. Let’s move on to ludo rules and see how to win the game in detail.

Ludo Rules in Detail

Now let’s finally move on to- how to play Ludo game, create strategies and how to win…

How to Play Ludo

  1. Ludo game starts in the clockwise direction, the player with the number 6 on die starts the game.
  2. On each throw, a player decides which token to move. A token simply moves in a clock-wise direction around the track according to the number on dice.
  3. If a player is not able to move the token legally according to the number on dice, then the play passes to the next player.
  4. According to Ludo Rules, a throw of 6 grants another chance.
  5. A player must throw a 6 to move a token from the starting circle onto the first square on the board.
  6. If a token land on another token of the different colour, then that token is returned to its staring circle and the game is replayed for that token.
  7. If a token land upon a piece of the same coloured token, then it forms a block. This block cannot be passed or landed by any opposing token.

These Ludo rules differ in different regions with different boards.

How to Win Ludo Board Game?

After travelling through-out the board, the token returns to the coloured column which is the home column of the player. There, the player has to throw the exact number on the die which is needed to reach the winning triangle. One by one, all four tokens have to be reached on the winning triangle. After the last token has reached the winning triangle, a player wins.

The important thing in ludo rules is, no opposing player can throw your token back to the starting circle once you have reached in the home column

Variations in Ludo

In some ludo rules, boards of Ludo have stars placed at certain places on the board. Those stars mean that your token cannot be backed by the opponents’ on that place. Your token is safe on those stars.

Note: -

  1. If your token is thrown back to starting circle, it can start re-playing only after you throw a number 6 on the dice.
  2. A token thrown to home once can again be thrown back to home until it finally reaches to the home column.
  3. You’ll get another chance on 6 even if you are in the home column and need some another number to win. The only difference is; you won’t be able to use that 6 as you needed a smaller number.

For e.g., if a player needs only a number 3 to win that token, and he got 6, then he will get another chance to roll the die and play but as the requirement is of 3, he cannot use 6. In any other situations, a player gets to play both chances with their tokens.

So these were the rules and history of Ludo. Maximum 4 players can play individually. If there are more players, it has to be played in partnerships. You cannot pass your chance if you can move a token. There are many versions of Ludo rules played differently in different countries using different boards.
