Pictionary Rules in Detail

Pictionary is family classic game that only requires paper, pen, and a board, timer, cards and 2 dice. Let’s have a look at how to play Pictionary in detail.

Game Objective

The goal of the game is to guess what the player is trying to convey through the pictures that they draw. You proceed on the game board by guessing correctly, and the first to get to finish the square wins.

How to Make Pictionary

Before starting, give each person a pawn and place all the pawns on the start square. Then each person would need paper, a writing instrument and a category card.

There are 4 categories- All Play (AP) where the players can use any words or expressions, D for difficulty, A for action or verbs, P for nouns such a person, place or animals, and O for object nouns which may be anything that can be touched or seen. If there is a little triangle next to the word, it is considered as an all play card.

How to Play Pictionary Board Game?

Assign one player from your team to be the first picturist. Roll Dice to see which team goes first. The highest roll gets to pick a card from the deck and All Play (AP) category is chosen for everyone to guess. According to Pictionary rules, once a card is drawn, the picturist has 5 seconds before they begin to draw. After 5 seconds, the timer is set to 1 minute and the picturist draws their clues.

Note: - Sketches cannot contain letters or numbers

All the players guess in the first round and have a minute or so. The team who guesses first and that too correctly gets to roll a die and update the number of squares. After doing so, they switch the picturist and draw a card. The new picturist has 5 seconds to think and prep for their sketch and one minute to draw.

In similar way, all consequent rounds are played where only teammates guess the clue. Pictionary rules state that if a team guesses correctly, they may roll the dice again and proceed to a new square. This keeps on going, until a team guess incorrectly, then a new team gets to play. That team starts by drawing a card and start the sketch and guess process. The first team to finish the square wins the game.

Clue Cards

Pictionary rules are the same for both kids and adults. There is “Kids’ version” printed on one side (yellow side), while “Adults version” (blue side) on the other. In the kids’ version, the clues are grouped into just one theme which is seen as a big word running down the side of the card. While the adult clues are just represented by small icons next to the clues. For kids, Pictionary rules are relaxed a bit. The picturists can read the category aloud to their teammates. But, remember, the picturists must not at all read/ say aloud the clues.

Important Points to Remember

There are certain important Pictionary rules you should remember before playing-

  1. The basic Pictionary rule states that never act without picture card.
  2. Be as creative as you can with the picture cards. You can combine them, stack them or also act with them.
  3. Just like charades, homophones play an important rule here. Homophones are the words that sound identical but have different spellings and meanings. For e.g. “plain” and “plane” or “three” and “tree”. Try to make your team guess homophones if the other word is too difficult.
  4. The ‘actors’ or picturists are not at all allowed to make any sound or speak. They can make basic hand gestures, shake head or node.
  5. You are not allowed to point at your ear to convey ‘sound’.
  6. You are not allowed to used sign language or use dashes to let your teammates know how many words are there in the answers.

At the End…

Pictionary is a family game which you can play with your kids as well. The more fun it is to play; the easier Pictionary rules are. Now you are aware of how to play Pictionary. It’s really fun to play when you are used to playing Pictionary.
