Every year, about 900 movies are filmed in Paris. Travel and touristic guides have seized the opportunity to propose atypical tours in the city, on places that have been used as setting for movies.

Successful movies have been shot in Paris

Among the 900 films that are shot in Paris each year, some have become worldwide success as Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain or the Da Vinci Code. They attracted many visitors in the places where they were filmed.

The sixth part of the adventures of MIF agent Ethan Hunt, Mission Impossible: Fallout, producted by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise was the last to be shot in France’s capital. The filming lasted 36 days and was made on 15 various places including the Trocadero esplanade, the Grand Palais, the Bercy heliport, the Palais-Royal gardens...

Montmartre: a privileged place for filming

Lise Pires works as a guide by day and sometimes as extra on films at night - she took part in the last Mission Impossible - . On week-end, she organizes Paris guided tours on the topic of cinema in Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement. Those visits allows the participants to relive the walk that was made the fame of Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain. For her, this area is one major place for a movie-themed tour. Participants are from Montmartre but also films lovers, artists, and provincials.

A Paris tour private guide passing by the Maison Collignon grocery store with his group explain that a sequence of Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain was filmed there.

As years go by, many French filmmakers use Montmartre for their movies. Some famous sequences have increase the fame of the place especially in La grande vadrouille (1966), Mesrine (1984), L'auberge espagnole (2001), La Môme (2007), or of course Dalida (2017). The house of this latter in included within the tours proposed in Montmartre.

Other places for movie-themed visits in Paris

The director of France Tourisme and Paris travel planner, Patricia Firriolo, analyses the public’s passion for the visits based on movies. Da Vinci Code, released in 2006, was the trigger of the successive waves of visitors in the Louvre Museum. Americans came first, followed by Asians.

The concept seduces. In Montmartre or Saint-Germain-des-Prés, almost 6 visits per week are organized, from September to June. La Cité du cinéma, owned by Luc Besson in Saint-Denis has the same fame. For standing out, the tour operator create an atypical type of visit based on a scenario made by an actor in which the visitor can take part in the movie for an afternoon.

We can be sure of one thing: filmmakers will continue to choose the natural settings of Paris instead the studios.
