There are two species of elephants named African bush elephant and the African forest elephant. There is another species named Asian elephant lives in Southeast Asia.

The formation of their mouth is the reason why they are herbivorous. You can always find them grazing. The meat cannot come out easily which make them feel uncomfortable.

How Do Elephants Sleep?

The human being needs 7 to 8 hours to sleep the same way animals also require enough sleep. The confined elephants sleep 3 to 7 hours at a time. But the elephants living in the jungle have different patterns. They sleep for only 2 hours. They rest two hours at night. Sometimes they have sleepless days roughly one and half month. African and Asian elephants sleep for a long time. Sometimes, they take a nap while standing or with the support of trees.

Elephants are herbivorous. They like to eat bark, shrubs, bushes, fruits, flowers, and many more. As per elephants size, they eat large quintiles of food. But the problem is that they cannot digest 100 percent food. They can digest only 15 percent of the food as their digestion system is very weak.

What Do African And Asian Elephants Eat?

The African elephants are larger than Asian elephants in size. They require a lot of food to survive. African requires more food than Asian elephants. Let’s compare the food quantity of both. The African elephants eat 250 kilograms of food each day and also consume 60 liters of water whereas the Asian elephants eat less as compared to the African elephants. They ingest 150 kilograms of food and drink 40 liters of water. Both of them prefer to eat early in the morning and at the time of sunset.

The African elephants occupy a wide range of habitats such as mountains, deserts, a vast meadow, and small hills. They love eating leaves, woody plants, leafy plants, soft shoots, fruits, and flowers. They also eat the bark of trees to quench their hunger. It is not so only human being destroy the trees. Elephants also uproot trees for food.

What do Asian elephants eat? The Asian elephants are found mostly in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Southern India. They live in the thorn-scrub forest. They generally eat grass, plants, woody plants, flowers, fruits and different types of vegetables. The Asian elephants like to eat bamboo as there are lots of bamboos in this locality. They just love bamboo. Elephants can go long distance for food. When there is dry they can travel more in search of water.
