The hippopotamus is commonly referred to as the hippo. Hippo is a large animal that lives in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. It is the third-largest animal. The word “hippo” was taken from the ancient Greek term “river horse” Hippopotamus are mostly found in Africa in large numbers. They are considered as the largest mammal animals worldwide. Hippo got a large round body and short legs. It is a weighty animal. The weight is around 3000 to 8000 pounds! Hippos are always alert in the water to protect themselves from other water creatures. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils help them to save from water predators.

They are not good at swimming. But they can wander along the bottom of rivers. They spend most of their time in the water in order to save skin from the sun’s rays. They only come out of the river when they feel very hungry. Generally, they come out in the evening time when the sun goes down.

Where Do Hippos Live?

First of all, we will find out where do hippos live? Then we discuss what do hippos eat? There are two types of hippos the H.amphibius and the H. liberiensis. The H. amphibius is the largest hippo species which are mostly found in sub-Saharan Africa whereas the H. liberiensis live in Western Africa. They are also referred to as pygmy hippo. They build their habitats around the lakes, rivers, and swamps in order to stay near the water. When it is too hot in the summer the bodies of water save them from hot. Hippos give birth in the water. Hippos are mostly found in the following countries: Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Africa. The pygmy hippos prefer to live in the habitats with bodies of water.

Pygmy Hippopotamus:

Pygmy hippos are the smaller of the two hippo species. The pygmy hippos prefer to live in the habitats with bodies of water. They like to dwell in the forest habitats. They also make their house in swamps in Western Africa. Pygmy hippos love to stay alone. They are mostly reclusive. Pygmy hippos spend most of their time in the water to keep its body’s temperature cool. They prefer water is the best place for mating and giving birth. Pygmy hippos are herbivorous. What do hippos eat? They like to consume broad leaves of the plants, vegetables, different types of fruits ranging from the trees or plants in the wild.

What Eats Hippos?

Many of us are still confused about the diet of hippos. Many people think that they are carnivorous due to their large body. However, they are herbivorous. They avoid consuming meats or decaying things. They consume flowering plants, fruits, leaves of trees, and grass. Majority of hippos prefer to eat short grasses. They also like to eat a variety of fruits in the wild.

Hippos love eating grass on the land. In the water, they consume aquatic plants. They avoid consuming coarser grasses as it is very difficult for them to digest quickly. They do not chew like other animals. They can travel a long distance in search of a sufficient amount of food. If they are in captivity they will feed lettuce, hay, and a wide variety of vegetables. Different kind of healthy fruits is provided to them. In captivity, they are given vegetables pellets to provide nutrition. In some cases, hippos may consume meat due to insufficient nutrients.

Are Hippos Dangerous?

Don’t know whether hippos are dangerous or not but they look dangerous. Are hippos dangerous to the human being? Hippos are very strong animals. Its large body plays a very important role to threaten other animals in the wild. Hippos can take on any animals in the water or on the land. Even lions are scared of hippos. They are very aggressive and short-tempered. They are more dangerous than elephants. It is estimated that hippos kill 2000 to 3000 humans every year. Those who have lost their lives they took this animal lightly. They could have avoided this situation.

Why Are Hippos Dangerous?

There are two species of hippos existing worldwide. One is common and the second one is Pygmy hippopotamus. Hippos are considered as one of the most aggressive animals in the world. They are very aggressive by nature. They attack humans in the water as they believe humans are a threat to their habitats and lives. They also fear to lose their natural habitats permanently. Such fears make hippos very dangerous. Hippos are considered as the territorial animals in the water which have specific territories in the water. When their territories are at stake they show their aggressive side. Many experts claimed that hippos live for many years due to its aggressive nature. When hippos find their lives in trouble they attack. In the case of thirst and hunger, they attack humans. The mammal hippos can fight any situation to protect their baby hippos.
