The iOS12 brings you significant performance improvements and a handful of tools to help combat iPhone addiction. Whether you are a curious iOS user or iPhone expert, here's everything you need to know about iOS 12 including what does it offer in terms of functionality, speed, interface changes, and new features. iOS 12 will be introduced mostly in the autumn (September).

Apple categorized the changes and new features of iOS 12 into 14 categories - it's a major update - performance and stability was the main focus in this update. Apple worked on to make iOS feel faster than ever, particularly on older iPhones and iPads.

As per Craig Federighi, Apple is "doubling down on performance", in order to make iPads and iPhones faster and more responsive.

The iPhone 6 Plus, for instance, sees significant speed boosts with the iOS 12 update. Apps launching 40 %faster, swipe to the camera is 70% faster, and the keyboard appears 50% faster and typing is more responsive. Apple worked to speed things up for the full range of devices supported by iOS 12. iPhones and iPads will now be better than ever at delivering best performance while also prolonging battery life.

New Animoji with Tongue Detection

iOS 12 introduces new features including tongue detection and better face tracking. There are also four new Animoji characters, including Ghost, Koala, Tiger, and T-Rex, along with an all-new customizable Animoji experience named Memoji.

The new Memoji feature allows you make a personalized Animoji in the Messages app that looks just like you using a huge collection of customization options. Memoji helps you create a personalized Animoji in the Messages app that is much similar to using a huge set of customization choices. You have choices to create Memojis with different styles and looks – a variety of skin color, hair color, hair style, eye color, eyebrows, nose, features like freckles and facial hair, accessories, and headwear are there for you.

Screen Time

This new feature will tell how much time you are spending on your device and using particular apps. It will give you a weekly summary of your usage habits. If you are wasting too much time, you can set yourself a limit daily and Screen Time will notify you when you’re about to reach your limit.

When you hit the set time limit, Screen Time will stop you continue using the app, though you can opt to ignore that. It will also allow you to set limits for your kids and give greater supervision over how often they are staring at a screen. Your settings will sync across all your other iOS devices.

Siri's Shortcuts

Siri includes a new feature called Shortcuts - basically (potentially multi-step) voice-triggered actions customized to individual apps. The new Siri can do all kinds of actions when you speak simple commands using your respective apps. All your apps can add Shortcuts. It just displays an 'Add to Siri' icon, and this lets you build a voice shortcut for a specific feature of that app.

For example, when you say that you’ve misplaced your keys, Siri will use the Tile app to find them. Or say, “I’m heading home,” and Siri may load your Maps app and your favourite podcast.

You can make your own shortcuts and train Siri to carry out a bunch of different actions triggered by custom commands.

Do Not Disturb

This feature has been enhanced in several ways in iOS 12. There is a new Bedtime mode that is created to hide all of your incoming notifications at night time, so all you see is the time and date.

Bedtime mode allows you to check your phone in the middle of the night without being distracted by notifications. In the morning, you can turn off Bedtime mode with a tap, allowing all those muted notifications to roll in.

There is also a new tool available called Do Not Disturb controls in the Control Center on iPhone and iPad. Pressing on the Do Not Disturb icon allows you to choose the options that include turning on Do Not Disturb for one hour, until tomorrow morning, or until you leave a set location.

iOS 12 offers greater control over the notifications that you're receiving each day with a new Instant Tuning feature. When you receive a notification on your iPhone or iPad, you can press on it to get options that include Delivery Quietly or Turn Off.

Selecting Deliver Quietly makes it so an app's notifications show up in the Notification Center and make a badge on the app icon, but don't show up on the Lock Screen or display banners.

Measure app

The new feature Measure app in iOS12 helps speedily gauge the size of real-world objects, as well as a new open file format with iOS 12 using AR technology. Measure app will help you easily get direct measurements of any objects around you. It will just tap the object and drag out a line and measurement details will be right there on your screen.

Apple introduced ARKit 2 which helps developers to integrate shared experiences, persistent AR experiences tied to a particular location, object detection, and image tracking to make AR apps even more vibrant.

In the Photo app, iOS 12 introduces a new Search Suggestions, which highlights your photos based on key events or categories like swimming and hiking. You can also search for places by business name or a broader grouping such as a museum.

With its focus on performance, stability, and functionality, iOS 12 is not the most innovative upgrade ever. However, it does make iOS devices and iOS Application Development better — and that is eventually the name of the game.
