Description: Accountable care organization (ACOs) are designated entities held accountable for the financial and quality outcomes of a defined population. ACOs were developed to move the U.S. health care system toward the goals of the Triple Aim. ACOs were first adopted in Medicare under the Affordable Care Act of 2010. First Medicaid ACO Program launched in 2011. ACOs have since become a leading payment and delivery reform model across all payers.
