Description: Successful wound repair is a coordinated response to injury and its microenvironment. Chronic wound management presents a significant burden to both human and veterinary healthcare. Most traumatic full thickness skin wounds in horses heal by second intention due to tissue loss, bacterial contamination, and skin tension. Distal extremity wounds can lead to exuberant granulation tissue formation and abnormal healing. This aberrant wound healing is initiated, in part, by early hypoxia and failure to transition out of the inflammatory and proliferative stages of healing. The blood vessels that do form in response to the initial wounding are thought to be poorly functional and contribute to sustained poor oxygenation and subsequent up-regulation of angiogenic and fibrogenic cytokines. Chronic wounds on the lower limbs of horses thus develop in response to chronic hypoxia and dysregulation of the inflammatory and proliferative phases of healing.
